Join student loan planner, David Gourley, to learn the latest strategies on student loan forgiveness and how to help clients, including Parent Plus borrowers, take advantage of the loan forgiveness opportunities that still exist with Income Driven Waivers, PSLF and more. David will also address the double consolidation “loophole” for Parent Plus borrowers and how they can become eligible for the SAVE repayment plan, how he’s helped new borrowers get multiple years of $0 loan payments using tax filing strategies, and how married filing separately is helping some of his clients take their student loan payment down to $0.

Learning Objectives:

  • An advisor will understand what the IDR Waiver is, when it expires (as of now), and how it can help their clients.
  • An advisor will understand the difference between FFEL loans and Direct Loans and look for opportunities for their clients to take advantage of the waiver.
  • An advisor will be able to talk to their clients about how to break the Parent Plus status off of their loan by doing a double consolidation.
  • An advisor will be able to use tax filing strategies to help younger student loan borrowers have several years of $0 student loan payments.
  • An advisor will be able to help a client run scenarios to see if MFS vs MFJ would be better to take advantage of a lower student loan payment.
