Advisors who are aware of Section 1031 exchanges sometimes think there’s not much utility for them in learning the topic because the exchanges do not present opportunities for advisors to directly assist clients. But Section 1031 exchanges are complicated and do offer opportunities for a financial advisor to provide valuable advice on tax planning issues, succession planning, specialty lending, and other services where an advisor can shine. This program will recap the basics behind Section 1031 exchanges and the investment choices available to clients, to include UPREITs and Delaware Statutory Trust (DST) options.

Objectives:

  • Give listeners a basic understanding of what a Section 1031 exchange is and how it works.
  • Educate financial advisors about ways to add value through Section 1031 exchanges.
  • Highlight issues that advisors can spot that would merit involvement from others on the advisory team, such as accountants and lawyers.
