How Social Security works for people who have also earned a public sector pension can often be confusing.  The Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) affects the benefits paid to a public sector employee who has also worked and paid into the Social Security system, while the Government Pension Offset (GPO) impacts people who attempt to collect benefits based on the work and earnings of a spouse.

Kurt Czarnowski, the Social Security Administration’s former Regional Communications Director for New England, explains WEP and GPO.  He also covered other topics such as when you can start to collect, how your benefit is calculated, and the impact of working in retirement, as well as answered other general questions which attendees had about the operation of the program.

John O'Connor joined Kurt to show how you can illustrate the impact of WEP and GPO on a client's benefits.
